The Police Station…
It was a beautiful spring morning in the city of Chicago. The sun hung brightly in the clear blue sky as a soft wind blew a cool breeze through the neighboring
trees. Karen Morton drove to the station in her red convertible. She drove with the top down. The wind blew softly through her long strawberry hair. She took a deep breath of the fresh spring air and let it out into a sigh.
“What a beautiful morning.” She said to herself.
Karen slowly drove the car into the parking lot. She then slowly parks the car and turns the engine off. She quickly grabs her purse from the passenger seat and climbs out of the car. After climbing out of the car she closes the door and starts walking towards to the doors of the police station. At seven- thirty in the morning on a typical Monday, Karen Morton arrived at the station.
She walks through the double doors with a smile that would normally brighten the room, but not today. Disappointed that she didn’t brighten anyone’s day, she walks straight to the doubled desks that she and Nick shared on a regular basis.
“Well, I hope he is in a good mood this morning.” She said to herself.
The squad room was abnormally quiet this morning. There were no homicides to spoil the joy of catching up with long overdue paperwork. Karen slaps the morning paper onto her desk. She sat down in her chair and busies herself by putting her small handbag into the desk drawer. A second later Nicholas Cooper walks into the squad room whistling. Karen looks up as she closes the drawer
and gives Nick a warm smile. She was hoping that he would smile back.
“Good morning Nick.” She said happily.
“Good morning Karen.” He replies as he approaches the doubled desks.
“Good, at least he is not in a grouchy mood this morning.” She thought.
Nick smiles back as he tips his hat slightly. She gaps out loud when she saw how handsome he looked in his denim blue jeans and blue dress shirt.
She blushes slightly when their eyes met. Her heart began to pound fast as they starred at each other. She quickly turns around before Nick could see her
blushing. Karen felt silly every time that she and Nick got together because her heart does a flip-flop. She would have thought after working all of these years with him that she wouldn’t feel like a lovesick schoolgirl. Finally she turns back to face Nick after she had regained control of her feelings towards Nick.
“So did you sleep well last night?”
“Sure did. I slept like a baby last night.
Nicks walks over to the small table that stood nearby. He starts to make a pot of coffee as he talks to Karen.
“So how about you?” he asks when he finished fixing the pot of coffee.
As the coffee starts to brew, Nick turns around to face Karen.
“I slept pretty good myself.”
“That is good. A good night’s sleep does a body good.” He replies as he laughs at his own joke.
Karen laughs with him nervously. A second later the coffeepot was finished
brewing. Nick turns back to the pot and grabs two empty paper cups. He then grabs the pot and pours coffee into two cups. Just as he was finishing fixing the two cups of coffee, their boss Charlie Miller, enters the room. In his hand he was carrying a sheet of paper. Charlie smiles as he approaches Karen and Nick. Nick turns around from the table with two paper cups in his hand.
Nicks walks over to Karen and hands her a cup. Karen accepts the cup of coffee with a smile. She looks down into the cup. Steam came out of the paper
cup. She sniffs the coffee. She sighs as she slowly sips the coffee. It smells fresh and tastes sweet with a touch of hazelnut flavoring.
“Thank you.” She said.
“Your welcome.”
They both turned to the captain as they sip their hot coffee.
“What’s up cap?” Nick asks.
“I have a case for you.” Charlie replies coolly.
Charlie slowly hands the sheet of paper that he was holding to Nick.
“What kind of case?” Nick asks curiously.
“I don’t know all of the details. The forensic team and the coroner are all ready there processing the scene. The address is on that sheet of paper that I had given you.
Nick glances down at the sheet of paper. He then looks up from the sheet of paper.
“Who was the first to respond?”
“An officer named Brian Cole. Once you get there he will give you the details to the case.” Charlie replied.
Nick turns around and grabs his car keys just as Karen grabs her purse. She stood up from the chair and starts to follow Nick as he walks to the front doors of the station.
“Keep me up to date on this case guys.”
“Will do cap. Will do.” Nick replies as they dashed out of the door.

The crime scene…
Twenty minutes later Karen and Nick arrives at the scene. They drove into the driveway and parks the car near an unmarked police cruiser once they parked the car, Nick turns the engine off. As Nick turns the engine off Karen looks around the yard. She notices that there were several police cars in the driveway and on the streets with their red and blue lights flashing. They both stepped out of the car and closes the doors. Nick and Karen then started to walk towards to the house. As they walked to the house, Karen took in her surroundings with a sharp cop’s eye. She didn’t want to miss anything that could be important to the case.
They were half way to the house when a young officer approaches them. He gives both detectives a warm smile as he greeted them.
“Good morning detectives. My name is Officer Brian Cole. You can just call me Brian.”
Both Karen and Nick smiles back as they shook hands.
“So what do we have Officer Cole?”
“By the sound of things a blood bath.”
He gestures towards the crime scene with his head. Brian, Nick and Karen headed over to the house. Walking into the hallway the taste and smell of copper met them in an unwelcome burst.
“Who called it in?” Nick asked eager to know what happened.
“The husband did. He came home late from his business trip either on a Sunday night or early Monday morning. He stopped at the office first. He then went to check on his wife an hour later. He found her upstairs with her throat slit and her body mutilated.” Brian answered.
“Torture?” Karen asked as the group enters the bedroom.
They stood in the doorway as they watched Katrina check out the body, which was lying face down.
“Oh yeah.” Katrina said in response to Karen’s question.
“This poor baby was definitely tortured. There are signs of sexual encounter too. The victim also has lacerations around her abdomen and upper torso as well the arms.” Katrina replies as she pointed to the lacerations at the different parts of the body.
“She struggled with the killer before he killed her.” She explained to the detectives. “However, I think the cause of death is some what obvious. Her throat is slit from ear to ear. The killer practically decapitated her.”
“And there’s no way this could be done after death?” Nick asked.
“Nope, look at all of the blood. Arterial spray here and here.” She said as she pointed to several lines of blood spatter across the now red wall.
“There’s a hell of a lot of blood here. There is no way had this happen after death. You wouldn’t get any spray just pooling. Here we have both.” Katrina explains to the detectives.
Karen looks around the room. There were puddles of blood all over the
room. The mattress on which the body was lying was so saturated with blood it had swelled up and was still dripping onto the floor. As she looked around the room she felt nauseous.
“Did you get the preliminary time of death yet?” Karen asked.
“Yes. I would say Sunday night or early morning on Monday. I will know more when I get the body back to the morgue.
“Okay, Katrina.” Karen said with a smile. “See you later.”
“Okay, see you later.”
Katrina went back to work. Karen and Nick turn back to Brian.
